On October 1, 2017 I will be walking in the AIDS run/walk. A remarkable 90% of the money we raise will go directly back to fund direct patient services. In 2017 we have seen new hurdles to providing HIV care for some of the most needy individuals on Chicago’s West and Southwest side. Many of our patients are living at or below the poverty line and over 70% of our patients are funded through Medicaid. In addition, many in our community are uninsured and depend on Ryan White money for the critical care they receive including doctor’s visits and medications This year we have additional concerns about decreased funds because of the state budget issues in Illinois and the cloud of loss of expanded Medicaid on a federal level.
Sinai’s Infectious Diseases Program began 20 years ago when the first of 3 Infectious Disease (ID) physicians started working at the hospital. It was at a critical time in the HIV epidemic when new life-saving medications were becoming available, but were not penetrating into the communities we serve. Since that time we have built our services to include 3 full-time ID-trained physicians, OB and pediatric care and wrap-around services from HIV testing, linkage to care, case management, mental health services and linkage to substance abuse and housing services. Sinai’s Infectious Disease Program is proud to provide HIV testing that is integrated throughout the health care system, a center of high quality, culturally competent care located within the community, provide services to all individuals regardless of their ability to pay and be a team of caregivers that reflect the community and provide safe space to individuals without stigma.
donation to the AIDS Run & Walk Chicago allows people affected by HIV/AIDS to live with dignity and purpose. Your support helps the AIDS Foundation and it's community partners continue their important work in the city of Chicago. Ninty percent of the money raised comes back to help provide services and care for people living with HIV and cared for at Mount Sinai. All donations will help. Last year we were able to raise $10,000 that went directly to support people living with HIV. I am hoping to do it again this year.
I hope you can help in supporting me this work by donating. Any amount helps and all of your support is appreciated. If you are interested in walking or running, please join the team!
